Il passe une partie de son adolescence dans le sud de la France, à Grasse. En quête d’un ailleurs, il choisit la Marine pour effectuer son service militaire, puis se fait bûcheron en Suède, tout en menant des études littéraires à l’Université d’Umea. En 1975, de retour à Paris où il mène une vie de bohème, Albert Palma est victime d’un grave accident sur le tournage de L’Affiche Rouge de Frank Cassenti : il a les poumons brûlés et les séquelles le laisseront en grande partie sourd. Son second souffle, il le trouvera au Japon. De 1981 à 1990, il vit à Tokyo, est initié aux Arts Martiaux par Aoki Hiroyuki, maître de Karaté et fondateur du Shintaïdo, et obtient le diplôme d’instructeur. Il est également professeur de culture comparée et de littérature française à l’Université de Tsukuba, à l’invitation de Tadao Takemoto, grand traducteur d’André Malraux. Il rentre en France au début des années 90, fonde la Société des Gens de Gestes et développe une anthropologie du geste à travers la pratique de la « Voie des Arts ». Sa rencontre avec l’écrivain et poète Henry Bauchau en 2001 est le début d’une fertile amitié de travail. En 2003, il réalise ses premiers tableaux, et à partir de 2006 ses œuvres sont régulièrement exposées. Il fait alors d'autres rencontres décisives, dont, entre autres, Rémy Bucciali, chez lequel il réalise ses premières gravures ; Pascal Quignard qui l'invite à exposer à Guéret, lors des rencontres de Chaminadour en 2010 et écrit sa « légende » ("La conférence de Guéret sur Palma", in Les Carnets de Chaminadour. Pascal Quignard) ; Jean-Luc Nancy, enfin, qui lui consacre un texte critique et poétiqueQuand tout arrive de nulle part. Sur l'oeuvre d'Albert Palma, publié en 2015 aux éditions Manucius. Chaque trait de pinceau révèle une image de mon inconscient et en efface une autre. Born in 1947 in Algeria, Albert Palma lives and works in Paris. At the age of 20, he worked as a woodcutter whilst studying Literature and Art History in Sweden. In the early 70's, he was a promising young actor, but his career was cut short after his lungs were burned in a serious accident. Then, encouraged by friends, he went to Japan where he was initiated into the art of swordsmanship. His discovery of Japanese culture and the Far East sparked a radical change in his life. He spent ten years in Tokyo where he became a Master of martial arts. At the beginning of the 90's, he returned to Paris where he taught martial arts and developed his conception of "way of the Arts". He started drawing in 2003 and was quickly recognized as an important and original French artist. In 2013, he was awarded the Henry Bauchau Prize, presented by the Royal Academy of Belgium. Albert Palma's work is well known today and has been shown numerous times in exhibitions across Europe. Il est fils unique, né d’une famille de garagiste. A 17 ans, son goût de la peinture l’amène à participer à la mise en place d’expositions dans un grand théâtre lyonnais. Là, il rencontre des peintres dont Edouard Pignon, ami intime de Picasso. Il aime être dans les ateliers et regarder comment se fait la peinture. Il ne se sait pas encore peintre. Il se pense plutôt poète. Il écrit. En 1973 il quitte Lyon qu’il trouve trop «provincial» et s’ installe à Paris. Il poursuit des études universitaires et accumule les diplômes (Droit, sociologie, sciences politiques). Il organise aussi des expositions pour les artistes qu’il aime. Un jour de printemps 1978 il commence à peindre .Très vite il comprend qu’il tient là «son» moyen d’expression. Sa vie s’en trouve bouleversée. Il sait que la route sera longue et escarpée mais il sait aussi qu’il aura la force de la fraîcheur. En peinture il doit tout apprendre. A sa façon . C’est là qu’il regarde les maîtres que sont pour lui Matisse et Cézanne. Il a toujours penser qu’être artiste c’est être au monde, le plus possible. Sans doute pour mieux approcher ses secrets. Alors à partir de 1980 il voyage, beaucoup. En 1987 il rencontre Sophie avec qui il aura deux enfants. De 1990 à 2000 il peint des paysages,des arbres,des fleurs. Il ralentit le rythme des voyages et se concentre sur le travail de l’atelier. Cela ne l’empêche pas de se rendre à plusieurs reprises à Madrid pour retrouver Goya qu’il admire. Un compagnon aussi. Lucia di Budoia, dans la région italienne du Frioule, il passe son enfance dans un village de montagne des Dolomites. En 1976 il quitte l’université d’architecture de Venise pour s’adonner en autodidacte à ses multiples passions. Son art prend différentes formes : de la peinture au graphisme, de la musique à la bande dessinée, de la photographie à la scénographie. C’est à partir de 1985 qu’il devient exclusivement plasticien. Il habite de nombreuses villes, Pérouse, Trieste, Rome, Milan, Munich. Il vit et travaille actuellement dans les montagnes du nord de l’Italie, non loin de Belluno. Il poursuit des études en science économique ( ESCP), puis s’échappe sans tarder vers un hameau isolé de Savoie où il convertit une grange en atelier. Il y travaillera pendant huit ans, entrecoupés de nombreux voyages autour du globe. C’est là qu’il commence à graver des signes sur des panneaux de plâtre, qu'il décrit comme des alphabets imaginaires. Alexis part ensuite aux États-Unis pour raisons familiales et poursuit ce travail de gravure sur de grandes toiles, en remplaçant le plâtre par un épais médium acrylique . Dès 1991, il occupe un atelier à New York et attire l’attention de la critique par une série d’expositions : “Stein’s Diary” (New York Times), “Alphabets” (Artnews) , “Subtracted Words” (Art in America) . Puis il sera représenté par les galeries Stux/Haller et Elga Wimmer à New York, Ruth Bachofner à Santa Monica, Boyd Satellite à la Nouvelle Orléans, Isabelle Gounod à Paris. Michel Alexis a reçu le prix de la Fondation Pollock-Krasner (1994), ainsi que le prix de la Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts (2003). Il a exposé son travail au Los Angeles County Museum, Bronx Museum, Dortmunder Kunstverein, Musée Dauphinois, Denver University, Rhode Island University, Daum Museum, Tree Art Museum (Pékin, Chine) et de nombreux autres espaces publics. Since he worked with New York Times as an illustrator, he some times collaborate with other artists and brands. Now he is working and living in Paju.
